Shuyuan's Experience

I began my education in 1988 at the LiaoNing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (LCTCM) in China where I received Bachelor’s degree in Acupuncture in 1993. This 5-year medical program was established in 1950’s by Chinese government, offers the best opportunity to systematically study Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as well as Western Medicine, it also includes one year and half internship to practice both TCM as well as modern medicine under supervision.

Following the completion of my Bachelor’s degree, I pursued a Master’s degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) from September of 1993 through July of 1996 at LCTCM. This 3-year education and training greatly enhanced my understanding of the basic theories of TCM. I carried out a series of experiments on animal models and discovered that some Chinese herbal formulae were able to drastically reduce the side effects of chemotherapy, which also explored scientific basis of how Chinese herbal formula works.

Having been working both in China and in the United States following the completion of my graduate study from 1996 until today, I have been able to accumulate a great wealth of clinical and teaching experience. I have taught advanced courses of Acupuncture Points and Meridians, Oriental Medicine Diagnosis and Practicum, Oriental Nutrition, Herbal Internal Medicine, Dermatology of TCM, Cold Damage, and Warm Disease. I have also supervised the student’s clinic at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine for 3 years. I have also been invited to give 3 lectures for Professional Continued Study, the titles of the lectures were: The Management of Acne and Psoriasis, The Network of the Body – Channels and Meridians, Cosmetic Acupuncture.

When I worked as an INTERNIST AND ACUPUNCTURIST in the hospital in China, while managing all kinds of disorders, I developed special interest in DERMATOLOGY. I spent one year and half to follow one famous dermatologist, YIJUN ZHANG in our hospital. In the following years of practice in both China and USA, besides treating those common disease such as all kinds of pain disorders, chronic fatigue, depression, menopausal syndromes and so on, I combined Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Formulae and topical herb application as in tincture, cream, powder, herbal solution, managed many skin diseases with success such as Acne, Eczema, Dermatitis, Psoriasis, Herpes Zoster, Pruritus, Tinea, Urticaria, and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and so on.

Ever since the introduction of Western medicine in 1800s, there have been constant debates regarding the role of TCM vs Western medicine in China. The consensus is TCM has its unique role to play to serve the patients, it can also compensate to Western medicine in a variety of areas, and therefore it should not be eliminated or replaced by Western Medicine (Biomedicine). Therefore, in 1950’s, Chinese government encouraged Western medicine-trained physicians to study TCM for additional 3 years, then they worked side by side with TCM practitioners to establish a new combined program of Biomedicine and TCM. The length of the program is 5 years, including 1 and half years of internship training to practice both Western medicine and TCM. The goal of this program is ensure the graduates to be able to offer primary care for patients with the basic knowledge and skills in both medical systems, refer patients to specialist when necessary.
